Ernest Wilson Barnes was born in Montrose County, Colorado. He was the youngest of eight children of George Richard Barnes (1870-1944), born in Livingston County, Missouri, and Rosa Emma (Kincaid) Barnes (1873-1944), born in Grant County, Indiana. George and Rosa are buried in Cedar Cemetery in Montrose, Montrose County, Colorado.

Ernest was first married to Alice Hughes. It is unclear to this writer how many children they had, except Richard Barnes.

Ernest and Alice later divorced. Alice married a Mr. Shock and lived in Wichita in her later years. Alice died in Wichita on February 4, 2005 at the age of 88. She was survived by son Richard Barnes and daughter Biddie Holland, both of Wichita, 11 grandchildren, 26 gr. grandchildren, and 17 gr. gr. grandchildren.

Ernest was next married on September 14, 1944 to Gladys Moore. Gladys' first husband, Ira Allen Conner, died in a car accident in Los Angeles, California in 1942. Ira and Gladys had children Ira Wesley Conner and Hazel Conner, who were later adopted by Ernest. (Patricia G. Crawford, granddaughter of Ira Allen Conner and his first wife, Pat.)

Ernest's mailing address was listed as in c/o Mrs. Hazel Kritchman (Ernest's adopted daughter), Rt. 1, P. O. Box 323, Palisade, Colorado. This is from information shown in the papers of the estate of Mollie (Barnes) Gauld dated May 22, 1969. As one of Mollie's 12 nieces and nephews Ernest received $212.50, the same amount as the others.

A photo included here is of Ernest and his nephew George Barnes sitting on a front porch following the funeral of Ernest's brother E. Harry Barnes at Harry's home in Wichita on August 15, 1973. By clicking on these photos a caption will identify the people and other details.

Gladys died June 21, 1987. Ernest died March 14, 1975 at the age of 59 in Colorado. Ernest was a retired Colorado Highway Department employee and resident of western Colorado for most of his life. His interests included hunting, fishing and woodcarving. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and the IOOF of Grand Junction. Ernest was survived by his wife, daughters Mrs. G. E. Kretschman of Palisade, Mrs. C. J. Koch of Oxford, Kansas, and Mrs. Jerry Howlett of Grand Junction; sons, Ira Barnes of Freemont, California and Richard O. Barnes of Wichita, Kansas. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and 4 gr. grandchildren.
