From the Wichita Eagle, Wednesday, October 28, 2015;
"Richard Orville Barnes, 77, retired Iron Worker, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Marie Barnes; parents, Ernest and Alice Barnes; sisters, Loretta Chewey and Biddie Holland. Survivors include his children, Noal L. Barnes, Jarrett W. Barnes (Ariela), Abbie M. Barnes, and Alice R. Nyambwa (Ajiru); sister, Kay; 12 grandchildren and 4 1/2 great-grandchildren. Memorial services, 4 p.m. Sunday, November 1, at Grace Revolution Church, 812 S. Oliver. Services by Broadway Mortuary."

The Pastor Tim Hurst officiated the funeral service which was handled as a celebration of Richard's life covering highlights such as Richard's service in the United States Navy as a 2nd Petty Officer from 1957 to 1961, but primarily focused on Richard's life as a family man, his close ties with his late wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his strong Christian faith. At the request of family, Pastor Hurst conducted the service wearing a Kansas City Chief's jersey since Richard was a faithful Chiefs fan, and it was mentioned that the Chiefs had won that very morning in a special game played in London, England. The funeral service was well attended by family and friends. The music selections were the songs "Daddy's Hands" and "Seven Spanish Angels." A video of still pictures shown during the service made Richard's close relationship with his family all the more evident. In recognition of Richard's military service, two members of the United States Navy Honor Guard of Wichita conducted the folding and presentation of the American flag to family members. At that time Pastor Hurst took a moment to thank Richard and all military personnel for their service and sacrifices in the military, protecting the freedoms of our country and the world. A fine dinner was made available to all in an adjoining hall following the service.
