Army Air Force Major Andrew A. Barna of Montgomery County, Maryland. Major Barna died of a non-combat related accident on August 2, 1945 while on duty in China.


Major Andrew Aloysius Barna was born on Sept. 1, 1919, in Highland Park, New Jersey, to Paul and Elizabeth Barna. His father was a coal miner who immigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1910. Andrew was the third of 8 children residing in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania for most of his childhood. He enlisted into U.S. Army Air Corps in 1937 at the rank of Private and was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1940, he then was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on Dec. 2, 1942, and then 1st Lieutenant in April 1943, and then Captain in Nov. 1943, and finally achieved the rank of Major. He was wounded in Italy while flying with the 8th Air Force, he recuperated at Walter Reed Hospital and then went to China-Burma-India and then returned to the U.S. to Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and then returned to China. Andrew married Mildred Hazel Jones on May 29, 1941, in the District of Columbia, and they had one child, Hazel Marie (Barna/Kyber) Simon. Hazel took her stepfather's last name (Kyber) when her mother, Mildred Hazel (Jones) Barna, remarried.
