James Edward "Jim" Austin Sr. Obt.

Army WWII), md on the 1 st of February 1918, Putnam Co., TN to Wilma (Sewell) Austin, b. 27 July 1922, Putnam Co., N – d. 31 July 1995, Putnam Co., TN, d/o William Thomas "Bill" Sewell & Winnie D. Maxwell. James Edward "Jim" Austin, s/o Ernest Haskell Austin Sr., (1888-1951) & Della Mae Brown (1893-1927), both buried in the Double Springs Cemetery, Putnam Co., TN.

Jim was a student at Tennessee Tech when Pearl Harbor was bombed December 7, 1941. He was also a member of the Tennessee National Guard. He entered active service with the US Army in 1942. He received his basic and technical training at various army bases. He received his commission as a Lieutenant at Camp Hood, Texas. He was with the first Division to land on the Normandy Beach and the first to cross the German border as the Allies drove the Germans out of France. In a letter he told of not having his clothes off for more than two months and was lucky if they had a chance to take their shoes off and allow their feet to rest. He was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action.
He was a retired Lt. Colonel with the Tennessee Army National Guard of which he was a member from 1945-1963. He was co-owner of the W. T. Sewell Wholesale Co., member of the Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Shriners and a Mason. He was one of the original organizers of the Baxter Civitan Club.
He was married to Wilma Sewell and they had three sons, James Edward "Jim Ed" Austin Jr., Dale Tuner Austin & Tom Sewell Austin.BAXTER – Funeral services for James Edward Austin, 74, of Baxter will be held Friday, October 30, at 2 p.m. in the Baxter Chapel of Hooper and Huddleston Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Mr. Austin died Wednesday, October 28, 1992, at his home.
He was born September 30, 1918, in Putnam County to the late Ernest Haskel and Mae Brown Austin.
Mr. Austin was a retired First Lieutenant with the Army serving from 1939-1945 and a retired Lieutenant Colonel with the National Guard from 1945-1963. He was co-owner of W. T. Sewell Company in Baxter and served as mayor of Baxter for 16 years. He was a member of the Baxter United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Shriners and a Mason. He attended Tennessee Tech University and was one of the original organizers of the Baxter Civitan Club.
His family includes his wife, Wilma Sewell Austin of Baxter; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jim Ed and Janice Austin of Baxter, Dale T. Austin of Hopkinsville, KY, and Tom and Donna Austin of Baxter, four sisters, Opal Bradford of Smithville, Anna Lee Perry of Kingston, Mable Joyce Moore of Sparta and Carlene Robinson of Cullman, AL; one brother, Ernest Haskel Austin Jr. of Fort Walton Beach, FL; five grandchildren, Cris, Amanda, Brandee Dale, Thomas and Johnny Austin, and several nieces and nephews.
