DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Catherine Jane Atkinson, 99, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Cumberland and Bedford, Pa., passed away Friday, April 2, 2010, at Hospice of Palm Beach County.

Born April 28, 1910, in Barton, Catherine was the daughter of George and Harriett (Preston) Robertson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Emmett Atkinson; brothers, Randall Robertson and Charles Robertson; and a sister, Alice Beeman.

Catherine graduated from Barton High School in 1928 and worked at the Celanese Plant and the Maurices' stores in Cumberland, Frostburg, and Bedford. She enjoyed needlework, reading, Yahtzee, card games, cooking and traveling to visit family.

Catherine is survived by daughters, Nadeane Gordon, of Frostburg, Arlene Izquierdo, of Delray Beach, and Evelyn Ratlief and husband Roy, of Grassonville; grandchildren, Bonnie G. Kunkel and husband Gerard, of Darnestown, and Barry L. Gurley, of Olney; and great-granddaughters, Erin Kunkel, of Providence, R.I., and Gwen G. Gurley, of Portland, Ore. Also surviving are her beloved sisters, Ann McCombs, of Westernport, Elizabeth Kyle, of Barton, Phyllis Stafford, of Michigan, and Lillian McFarland, of LaVale; many nieces and nephews; stepgrandchildren, Lana Matavik and husband Ron, and Roy Ratlief Jr. and wife Sharon; and stepgreat-granddaughters, Carey Ward, Rene Mayo and husband Chris and son, Jacob, and Jennifer Buck.

On Catherine's 97th birthday, she recited this verse she had learned in Lillian Mowbray Gattens' second grade class at the old Barton School, c. 1917-18:

Catherine arrived in this world in springtime and departed in springtime, just 26 days short of her 100th birthday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407 or a charity of choice.

A memorial service was held April 8, 2010, at the Jordon Fannin Funeral Home, Fort Lauderdale.

Burial services will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow, on April 25, 2010, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harry Coleman officiating.
