OBITUARY :
ALVIN LEE (BUD) ATKINS, 88, formerly of Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at Twin Oaks Assisted Living in Williamsport, Md.

Born March 1, 1923, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Harry B. and Beulah Judd Atkins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes V. Galliher Atkins, on Jan. 6, 1990.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe with the 9th A.A.F. Airborne Troop Carrier Command.

He retired from Fort Ritchie Post Engineers. He was previously employed by Fairchild Aircraft and Victor Products.

Bud was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He served as co-coordinator of the Community Food Bank.

He was a member of Funkstown Dixon Troxell American Legion Post 211, Silent Wings Museum Glider Pilots Association, AMVETS Post 10, SPCA of Washington County, National Association of Federal Retired Employees and Williamsport Red Men Conococheague Tribe 84. He was a life member of BPOE Lodge 378.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by nephew, Frank Schleigh and wife, Ruby, of Hagerstown; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stanley Steele and the Rev. Thomas L. Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where Elks Lodge 378 will have a memorial service at 6:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Building Fund, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740; Community Food Bank at St. Mark's Lutheran Church; Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742; or Williamsport Retirement Village, 154 Artizan St., Williamsport, MD 21795.
