Funeral services for the late Berry Aldrich [Aldridge] of Fremont were held at the home in Fremont Tuesday afternoon, August 5. Business houses of the town closed and activities in the neighborhood ceased during the funeral hour. The sermon was preached by Rev. E. Bedenham of Riceville, a former pastor of the Baptist Church and an intimate friend and close associate of Mr. Aldridge. Rev. W. B. Ireland, pastor of the Fremont M. E. Church, assisted in the service. The pallbearers were John N. McCoy of Oskaloosa, T. R. Carnahan of Cedar, A. F. Hoffman, W. E. Fellers, W. C. McDowell and J. S. McClain of Fremont. Interment was made in the Cedar Township Cemetery.

Berry Aldridge was one of the twelve children born to James Smith Aldridge and Louisa Kelly Aldridge, born September 25, 1862, on the old Aldridge homestead, four miles south of Fremont on Cedar Creek in Wapello County. He received his early education in the country schools and remained on the farm with his father until the year 1891 when he formed a partnership with J. S. Reeves, a neighbor, and they came to Fremont on July 1st, purchased a business lot and begn the erection of a brick building which has since housed their hardware and implement business.

They opened the store in September, 1894, and have conducted the business continuously since. On September 24, 1889, he was married to Miss Nellie Dinsmore and to this union were born five children: Mrs. Mary Rath of Waterloo, Iowa; Ruth, Esther, Mark and Robert at home. He is survived also by one grandchild Jack Rath of Waterloo, three brothers, and three sisters: Seth Aldridge of Atklinson, Nebraska, Clay D. Aldridge of Canada, Fred Aldridge of Fremont, Mrs. Frances English and Miss Dorcas Aldridge of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Dulcena Hall of Edina, Missouri, and many other relatives.

Death followed a long suffering from rheumatism, on Sunday, August 3, 1924. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodman lodges, had served the town of Fremont in the capacity of councilman for several terms and was fifteen years treasurer of the Fremont School District. He took an active interest in politics, being identified with the democratic party and was township committeeman for many years. He was a thorough believer in the fundamentsl of the Christian religion and he practiced what he believed.
