George Barth was a shoemaker by trade. He served in the Napoleonic wars in Belgium in 1812-15. When he was an old man, his son William Barth, sent the money for his passage from Dietz-Nassau, Germany, to America. George was married to Mina Grass. The Grass family was from Oranian, of the Netherlands, whence they fled to the Isle of Wight on account of religious persecutions, and from that isle they removed to Germany, where they became very prominent. One member of this family was a captain and two were lieutenants in the German army, and all three were killed in the battle of Waterloo. Another representative of that name was a general in Napoleon's army. [Information extracted from the biography of William Barth, Portrait and Biographical Record of Denver and Vicinity, pages 208-209, published in 1898.]

Seven children are known to have been born to George and Mina Barth: Charles J. Barth, William Barth, Henry M. Barth, Moritz Barth, Wilhelmina Barth, Emilie Barth, and Rosa Theresa Barth. George's wife, Mina Barth, died on October 30, 1882, in Kansas City, Missouri
