His brother, William Barth, took passage at Antwerp, in 1850, and after sixty-eight days landed in New Orleans, Louisiana, spending a short time there and then going to Belleville, Illinois. A year later, William, went to Glasgow, Missouri, in search of his brother Charles J. Barth, who had come to America two years earlier than William. Upon inquiry, he learned that his brother, Charles, had started for California, but perished on the plains. [Information extracted from the biography of William Barth, Portrait and Biographical Record of Denver and Vicinity, pages 208-209, published in 1898.]

There is a Charles J. Barth, who appears in the 1850 census of the Weaverville and El Dorado, areas of California. Whether, he reached San Francisco, California, before dying, is unknown. Sadly, his grave has never been found...

Courtesy from the Colorado Historical Society, was a typed interview by John J. Reithmann, an intimate friend of William Barth. It was titled:
WILLIAM BARTH'S START IN LIFE.
"Mr. Reithmann says that William settled in Missouri because he had a brother living there. The Barth's were all cobblers, said Mr. Reithmann. The first to be employed in that capacity in a small place near Fort Leavenworth, and when William reached the country it was natural for him to seek that point. But when he got there, with only fifth cents in his pocket, the brother was gone. He had removed to California, but he had left a vacant seat in a shoe shop in which he had been employed. William accepted the invitation to take up his brother's hammer and last. It was not long before he owned the shop."

William Barth - Removed to Parkville, Platte, Missouri, where he did find work in the shoe shop of William Williams. Published December 27, 1853 issue Industrial Luminary. Excerpt: "This is Barth a polite and practical gentleman who mends the soles and improves the understanding of his neighbors. [William Barth has recently taken over a shop vacated by William Williams on Main.]"
