Mrs. Rebecca Ridings Bates, 82, died Saturday night at Grundy after a long illness. Funeral and burial took place Sunday at Rock Lick with Rev. Adolphus Works officiating. Mrs. Bates was the widow of the late Jim Bates who preceded her to the grave about four years. She was the oldest member of the Rock Lick Baptist Church, having united with this church when she was 14 years old. Mrs. Bates was the daughter of John Ridings and moved to this county from Virginia when a young girl. There was doubtless no woman in the Grundy community who enjoyed more friends than did Mrs. Bates. She was an untiring worker in her church and was beloved by the entire community. Surviving are three sons, William and Jim Bates of Grundy and Richard Bates of Florida; one sister, Mrs. Vina Mills of near Bradley's Chapel; two brothers, Lewis Ridings of Somerset and Craig Ridings of Sugar Hill; and several grandchildren.
