Auburn started his career in a machine shop while attending Athens High School. Following graduation, he attended UGA for two years and worked at Basham Welding and Machine Shop as a machinist for 12 years. He then changed careers to the insurance business. In 1969 he went to work for the Independent Life Insurance Company, later American General until his retirement in April 2000. He was a member of East Athens Baptist Church since 1968, East Athens Civitan Club, Life Underwriters and U.S. Army Reserves.
