Obituary Bismarck Tribune (October 08, 2006)
CENTER - John Berger, 78, Center, died Oct. 5, 2006, at the Marian Manor Health Care Center, Glen Ullin. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with the Rev. John O'Leary officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin Cemetery, Center.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at St. Martin Church, where a parish vigil and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of the service Monday.

John was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Oliver County, the son of Yatsin and Mary (Mosbrucker) Berger. Raised and educated in the area, he married Helen Yantzer Oct. 20, 1952, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Center. They lived in many different areas of the country as John found work as a heavy equipment operator. In 1968, they returned to Center, where BNI Mines employed John until his retirement in 1992.

As a young man, John played softball and his love of the game of baseball continued throughout his life. He was an avid Yankee fan. He enjoyed playing cards, particularly bridge and pinochle. John and Helen enjoyed traveling the country for many years in their motor home. Beating everyone at beanbag brought joy to his life, as did playing with his grandchildren. In addition to raising their own three children, Helen and John also raised foster children.

He was a member of the St. Martin Parish, the Bismarck Eagles and the Good Sam Club.

John is survived by his wife, Helen, Center; his daughter, Mariann Morrow, Center; his sons and daughters-in-law, Rod and Leah, Center and Tim and Dorene, LaCrosse, Wis.; five grandchildren, Dan and Sara Berger, Kimberly and Mitch Berger and Amanda Morrow; one great-grandchild, Carter Berger; his sister and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Eddie Wetzel, Glen Ullin, and Peter Schneider, Center; his brother and sisters-in-law, Yatsin and Donna Berger, Beatrice Berger and Lolly Berger, all of Center; and the dog and cat that were a big part of his life, Soda and April.

His parents; his sister, Rose Schneider; and his brothers, Rufus, Raymond and Joe Berger, preceded him in death. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
