Services for John Clarence Austin, 81, of Varna, will be held Thursday, March 9 at 2 p.m. at the Varna First Lutheran Church, the Rev. James E. Walker officiating.
Mr. Austin died Monday, March 6, 1978, at 5:15 p.m. at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator, IL.
Interment will be at the Varna First Lutheran Cemetery #1.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Pries Funeral Home in Lacon, IL, and one hour before the service at the church. Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
Memorials may be made to the church or to the Varna Ambulance Service.
He was born in Varna April 3, 1895, the son of Nels John and Mary Lundgren Austin. He married Frank Boydston's widow, Irene Boynton of East Peoria at Varna November 8, 1964. She survives.
Other survivors include three brothers, Floyd and Bill of Varna; Melvin of San Jose, CA; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Benson of Varna and Mrs. Florence Munson of Midlothian, IL. One brother preceded him in death.
He was a World War I veteran, member of Varna First Lutheran Church, served as Mayor of Varna, Republican Precinct Committeeman and Republican Co-Chairman for many years; member of Varna Rotary Club, served as Varna Fire Chief; 50 year member of Magnolia Masonic Lodge and also belonged to the Peoria Mohammed Shrine. He was a member of the American Legion Post and was with the Marshall-Putnam Oil Company, beginning May 4, 1926 for 35 years.
