Charles Cowden Dies Suddenly in His Shop
Charles A. Cowden, 63, dropped dead in his barber shop at his home, 402 South Main street, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. His death was caused by a heart attack.
The lung motor crew from No. 1 fire station was called but efforts to revive Mr. Cowden failed.
Mr. Cowden was born in the town of Cowden Sept. 27, 1871. He and Laura Poole were married April 6, 1918, [in Salem, Marion County, Illinois]. They came to Decatur 16 years ago from Salem and Mr. Cowden has since conducted a barber shop in his home. He leaves his wife and a son and a daughter, Edward Cowden, Oakland, Calif., and Mrs. Velma McManaway, Champaign, and four stepchildren: Delbert Poole, Sandwich; Norman Poole, Readis Poole, and Mrs. Ida Fink, Decatur. He was a member of the Christian church. The body was taken to the Moran & Sons funeral home.
Short funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Moran & Sons chapel, where friends may call. Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. in the Christian church in Cowden. The burial will be in the Cowden cemetery.

She leaves a husband and daughter, Velma, and an adopted daughter, Marguerite, her mother, one sister, Mrs. Hattie Torrence, and brother, Jasper Montgomery, all of Cowden.
Note: The newspaper obituary spells her first name Mame, yet I found it spelled Mamie on her death certificate and on her marriage license application.
Mamie Alice Cowden was born on August 26, 1875 in Clay County, Illinois and died on September 14, 1911 in Cowden, Shelby County, Illinois.

Mrs. Jake (Laura Ann) Lappin, 90, of 555 S. Broadway died at 5:55 a.m. today,[March 3, 1972], in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in J.J. Morans Funeral Chapel where friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.
Mrs. Lappin was born in Pawnee [September 1881], a daughter of John and Alice Scott Wolfe.
She moved to Decatur from Salem 50 years ago.
Mrs. Lappin was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
She married Jake Lappin on Nov. 11, 1939, in Decatur. He died Dec. 14, 1957.
Surviving are sons, Delbert Poole of Sandwich; Readis "Pete" Poole of Lincoln; Norman Poole of Decatur; daughter, Mrs. Ida Fink of Decatur; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
