Nicholas N. Alongi, 93, of Rock Island, a Friendship Manor resident for the last five years, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, where a Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Mr. Alongi was born July 5, 1911, in Rock Island, a son of Vito and Martha Maro Alongi. He married Mary Sidoti Sept. 18, 1932, in Rock Island. She died June 15, 1999.

Nick worked as a machinist and later tool inspector at the former International Harvester Corp. Farmall Works, Rock Island. He retired in 1976 after 47 years of service. In early years he attended the former Brown's Business College.

He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, U.A.W. Local 1309 Retirees, Italian-American Society, Rock Island Golden K Kiwanis Club and longtime member of the Rock Island Eagles Lodge 906.

Nick enjoyed bowling, swimming, watching sports and traveling with his late wife. He also liked picnics and wiener roasts in the fall.

During his school years, Nick was a great basketball player and was a member of the Washington Junior High School City Champion basketball team. He loved his family, enjoyed spending time with them and was especially fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nick was proud of his Italian heritage.

Survivors include daughters and a son-in-law, Martha and Don Hentrich, Rock Island, and Margaret "Maura" Senatra, East Moline; grandchildren, Linda Johnson, Bettendorf, and Donald Michael Hentrich, Casper, Wyo.; great-grandchildren, Brad, Aaron and Jeremy Johnson, Michael and Misun Hentrich; and a brother, Phillip Alongi, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by a son, George Alongi; and a brother, Louis Alongi.
