Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (WI) - October 1, 2000
Deceased Name: Baumgartner, John Robert
Baumgartner, John Robert "Hurricane Bob" Born February 12, 1907. Died Sept. 30, 2000. Beloved husband of 53 years to Thelma (nee Kohl). Devoted father of Donald Baumgartner, Jean Kauth McGrath, Carolyn Maruggi and Roberta Axelrod. Grandfather of Sally, John, Lisa, Alyson, Sheryl, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Jonathan and Daniel. Great-grandfather of Jessica, Jennifer, Gabriel, Tamara, Robert, August, Dylan, Wyatt and Jacob. Admired Father-in-Law of Donna, Frank, Edward and Mike. Further remembered by many relatives and long time friends. Bob was an inventor, an entrepreneur and an industrialist who since 1933 founded and sold a number of machinery manufacturing companies in Milwaukee including Reliable Tool and Machine Works. Reltool Corporation and Mercury Engineering Corporation. The family has continued manufacturing machinery in Milwaukee with his son Donald together with Bob founding Paper Machinery Corporation in 1951. Today, after almost 50 years Bob's grandson John is the president of that company and his grand daughter Kelly continues in his entrepreneurial spirit as president and founder of Sun Tzu Security. In 1963 he carved a working plantation out of the jungle in Belize, C.A. where he became a familiar figure on the Belize River in his Everglades style airboats. Before returning to the States in 1973 he started Maya Broilers, a commercial chicken processing plant and Ridge Lagoon Plantation an earth moving construction company. He more recently made his summer residence in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin where he participated every year as the oldest contestant in the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club "Poker Run." This year at age 93 he proudly took the helm of his '66 Motor Yacht Ranger with family and friends aboard from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West. Bob or "The Skipper" will be best remembered for his many years as a Yachtsman both here on the Great Lakes and on the high seas. In 1965 he made national headlines when he successfully rode out Hurricane "Betsy" in his '92 Yacht "Trenora" earning him the nickname "Hurricane Bob." In 93 years a lot of water has passed under this man's keel. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by those who knew, loved and admired him for a life full of discovery and adventure. As Bob was an ardent admirer and supporter of the Calatrava designed addition to the Art Museum, the family would appreciate memorials in lieu of flowers to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Funeral Services will be held Monday (October 2, 2000) at Davis Mortuary, Sturgeon Bay at 12:00 PM with the RT. Rev. Paul Graf officiating. Entombment will be at Lauderdale Memorial Park in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Friends may call on Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 at Davis Mortuary, and on Monday at Davis Mortuary from 10:00 AM until the time of services.
