Josie was born in Shelton, Bonneville, Idaho, a small farming community southwest of Ririe, Jefferson, Idaho, daughter of John Johnson and Matilda Ann Howard Johnson. She attended grade school at Buck, graduated from Rigby High School, and finished her education at Ricks College, where she received her teaching certificate. She loved school and enjoyed teaching. She taught for several years in various schools in the Ririe area.
She Married Franklin Downs Howard 21 Mar 1925 at Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho, the marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They raised four children, Marion, Paul, Faye and Lucile. They lived on the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery road for nearly fifty years.
She and Frank were gone from the area for two years while they fulfilled a construction mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada, and Clovis, New Mexico.
She was a member of the Sarah A. Howard Camp of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and has collected many histories, which has given her a greater appreciation for her Pioneer ancestors and the sacrifices they made.
Josie died 9 Apr 1997,at Rexburg, Madison, Idaho, and is buried in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery, Ririe, Bonneville, Idaho.
