James was born 5 Apr 1912 at Shelton, Bonneville, Idaho (near Ririe) the son of John Johnson and Matilda Ann Howard Johnson. He grew up in Shelton and attended Buck elemetary school. He graduated from Rigby High school in 1931 and Ricks College in 1933 with an associate degree in teaching.
He attended Utah State University in Logan and the University of Idaho before receiving a bachelors degree from Ricks.
He married Eva Faye Izzat 22 Aug 1940 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He lived in Ririe until 1943 when he moved to Idaho Falls. He taught school at Ririe and Pine Creek, was Princpal at Ammon prior to 1943 and taught sience at O. E. Bell Junior High until 1973 when he retired. He taught school for 39 years, was a professional house painter and also worked for Idaho Irrigation District and Warehouse Furniture.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints and was a Temple Officiator. He was active in Scouting and was a member od the Local, State and National Teacher's Association.
He died 14 Jun 1985 in an Idaho Falls Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He is buried in the Ririe Shelton Cemetery, Ririe, Bonneville, Idaho.
