Painter. Cephas Giovanni Thompson was the son of renowned artist Cephas Thompson, who from early life taught his father how to paint. By 1827 he had begun to earn his living doing portrait paintings, including that of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He initially started his business in Plymouth, Massachusetts but moved his studio to New York City in 1837. He remained in New York until 1849 when he moved back to Massachusetts and opened a studio in Boston. He remained there until 1852 when he and his family removed to Europe where they remained for seven years visiting numerous countries. It was while traveling in Italy that he met and later became close friends with Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1859 he left Italy and returned to open a gallery in New York City. Some years later he painted a portrait of Robert E. Lee, which sold at auction at Asheville, North Carolina in 2014. Some of his most popular works include, "Lady with a Lute", "Memories of Italy", "Sebastian Cabot", "Portrait of a Woman of Boston" and numerous others. As recently as 2013 his painting have sold at auction at Christie's in New York. He is considered one of the most popular artists of the nineteenth century and his work are both sought after and valued.
