Cephas Thompson was a portrait painter. He was self-taught. Many of his works are in display at the Boston Athenaeum, including the likenesses of eight of his family. He has painted Chief Justice John Marshall, Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr, South Carolina Congressman David Ramsey, Actor John Howard Payne, and Writer George Washington Parke Curtis. He also painted the portraits of many Middleborough residents.

Cephas married Olive Leonard on March 18, 1802. She widowed him. They had 8 children:

Cephas married Lucy Thompson (his distant cousin) on October 24, 1819. She widowed him. They had one child:

Cephas lived most of his life in Middleborough, although he traveled south annually from about 1800 to 1825.

was born July 1, 1775; and by the will
of our blessed Lord and Saviour entered
the spiritual world Nov. 6, 1856: aged 81.
He was known and beloved, not only as a
man of integrity and worth, but for his tal
ents and skill as an artist and is remem
bered by all who knew him as one posse
ssing rare gifts of genius leaving to the
world the happy results of his labours
after a long life. he has passed, as we trust,
into a higher state of usefulness.
