James was born in Dungannon, County Tyrone. He was the son of Robert Barris and Mary Jane Wade. Mary Jane died in 1868 in Ireland.

James married first Jennie Courser on 20 Apr 1875 in Lowell. He married second Elizabeth (Ross) Cobb on 6 Sep 1893 in Lowell. It was the second marriage for both. All the children were by the first wife.

James was a blacksmith for the B & M RR.
