Mary Jane was born in New Mills Parish, County Tyrone. She was the daughter of Robert Barris and Mary Jane Wade. Mary Jane Wade died in 1868 in Ireland.

She married Thomas Ferris on 10 Mar 1865 in Dalry Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland. Her sister was Margaret Barris. (Mary Jane's sister married her husband's brother.)

In addition to those listed below, Mary Jane and Thomas had two additional children:

James, b. 26 Mar 1870 in Dalmellington Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland

William A., b. 17 Sep 1883 in Lowell, MA
