Myra Lake Shear was the youngest daughter of Charles Edward Lake and Lucy Ann Sharp Lake. Myra's mother Lucy died when she was 4 years old and her father Charles died when she was 8 years old. Myra and her two older sisters, Rebecca and Cora and her younger brother Richard was raised by their mother Lucy's brother Laban Sharp.

Myra married John William Shear on August 18, 1898 in Quincy, Adams Co, Illinois when she was only 16 years old. She stretched the truth about her age and her name. She made up a name that was not hers.

Myra and John had 10 children - two died in infancy.
