Helen Van Spronssen
Helen Van Spronssen was the third of five children born to Thomas L. Porter and Fanny McCutchan Porter. She was born 5 August 1894, at Alma, Nebraska, and departed this life Thursday evening, 27 December 1984, at her home in Alma. She was 90 years, four months and 22 days of age.
Helen attended the Alma Public Schools and graduated from Alma High School. She attended the University of Nebraska, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1918, and then entered Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, graduating in 1922. Helen attended graduate schools at State Colleges in Pennsylvania, studying psychology; New York School for Social Research, Omaha University, where she studied social work; and the Kinder Klinic in Vienna, Austria, working with nutrition and behavior in children. Helen also attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, the same college both of her parents attended. She returned to the University of Nebraska from 1940 to 1942 for further study.
In 1923 Helen was superintendent of a small hospital (20 beds and eight bassinets) in Havana Cuba. She, along with three other persons from Johns Hopkins, were sent with the assignment to set up and equip this hospital, and her duties included purchasing all medications for the hospital under the direction of the doctor.
From 1923 to 1924 Helen was a supervisor at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, and from 1924 to 1925 she was selected by the Red Cross for special assignment at San Domingo as supervisor of a 1700 bed military hospital and dispensory for families. At this time she was also a supervisor for the training school for nurses and people who went out to homes as social workers.
From 1925 to 1929 Helen was in charge of the Near East Training Center in Athens, Greece. This program was to train orphans to support themselves by humanitarian service to the people of their homeland.
Helen worked for many years in the child welfare department for the State of Nebraska. She retired in 1964 and moved back to Alma.
On 30 December 1939 she was united in marriage to Leonard Van Spronssen.
Helen was a long time member of the D.A.R. and P.E.O. Chapter of B.J., Alma Women's Club, a life time member of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association and a charter member of the Grand Lake Historical Society at Grand Lake, Colorado. She had attended the International Council of Nurses in Geneva, Switzerland in 1928. She had traveled extensively throughout Europe.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by three brothers, Guy Livingston Porter, Robert Bruce Porter and John Lemoyne Porter.
She leaves to mourn her passing one sister, Lucille Porter of Alma, other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held Monday, 31 December, at 2:00 p.m. at Banta-Torrey Funeral Chapel in Alma with Reverend Paul Johnson officiating. Organist Miss Verdeen Leopold played hymn selections.
Pallbearers were George Feese, Douglas York, Terry Woollen, Lyle Titkemeier, Conrad Cox and Don Bennett. Burial was in the Alma cemetery. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
