He married Luella Pearl Austin, daughter of Harry and Pearl (Petry) Austin of Little Falls, MN, on Saturday July 20, 1940. They were married in the Roosevelt Tabernacle, with the Rev. Ammon Austin, Luella's cousin, presiding. Sadie, Ammon's wife, sang "I love You Truly". Loretta Ringwelski, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. Lyle Cooley, brother of the groom, was the best man. Luella's niece, Frances Ringwelski, was the flower girl, and Jerry Austin was the ringbearer. Berton and Luella had three children: Deloris, Edward, and Mildred.
Berton was called upon to serve his country in WWII, leaving his wife and small children at home. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. After serving his country in WWII, Bert returned to Pine Center, MN where he engaged in farming.
Berton died as a result of injuries he sustained in a car accident on Hwy 371 near Nisswa, MN. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, in Brainerd, where he entered into rest. He left many family members to mourn his passing including a daughter, two sisters and two brothers, 9 grandchildren, many greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, one of whom used to call him "Grandpa". Berton was preceeded in death by his parents, one sister, and six brothers, and his children Deloris and Edward.
