Hattie Louise Trammel was born in Sevierville, Tennessee. Her mother "Dona" died when she was very young. Her father, Will Trammell had a large family from his first marriage to Maggie Wild. After Dona's death, Will moved to Big Pine, North Carolina, close to his first wife's family. Hattie remained in Catlettsburg (just north of Sevierville) and was raised by her maternal grandparents. She married John Hal Elder and had four children. They lived on a small farm just east of Catlettsburg.
