Gay Irene Crouch, age 89, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away March 13, 2012, at the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs.
Irene was born August 15, 1922, in Haswell, CO, to Mabel Pearl (Van Cleave) and Guy Albert Griffin.
She graduated from Broken Bow High School, Broken Bow, NE, in 1939. Irene married Glenn Penwell on November 14, 1942, along with her best friend Betty Jean Fair marrying Arthur Scully in a "double" ceremony. To this union a son, Jerry Penwell, was born. Glenn was killed in action during World War II.
Irene met and then married Philip Crouch on May 23, 1946. They had a son, Paul, and a daughter, Linda. Their lives started in Broken Bow, NE, and they retired in Chadron, NE. After several years they moved to Rapid City to be near their children. They spent their winters in Yuma, AZ, and loved every minute of it.
Phil and Irene loved to dance. They had the privilege of dancing to some of the well-known bands from the 40's.
In 2004, they entered the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans' Home. They never missed a dance there until shortly before Phil passed away in 2006. Irene continued to dance, even in a wheelchair. A special "Thank You" to the aides and volunteers for making that happen!
Irene was preceded in death by both her husbands; parents; siblings; granddaughters-in-law, Bertina Coleman Berkey, and Julie Klein.
Irene is survived by her children, Jerry (Christine) Penwell, Box Elder, Paul (Eileen) Crouch, Hill City, Linda (Dean) Loof, Rapid City; nine grandchildren, Tony (Sheryl) Klein, Rene Gonzales, Joe Klein, Shawn (Sheryl) Klein, Tina Penwell, Glenn Penwell, Philip Penwell, Michael Penwell, and Richie Berkey; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and her best friends, Betty and Art Scully.
Pallbearers are her grandsons, Tony Klein, Joe Klein, Shawn Klein, Glenn Penwell, Philip Penwell, Michael Penwell, and Richie Berkey.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 19, 2012, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs with Rev. Loyd Nielson officiating. Visitation will be held before the service. Interment will be held Monday, March 19, 2012, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
Memorials in Irene's name may be sent to the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.
