Man of Distinction

(From the Columbia State)
A distinguished gentleman with many South Carolina connections died recently at Sewanee, Tenn. Dr. Robert Woodward Barnwell Elliott was 90 and the oldest matriculant of the Episcopal University of the South. He is descrived as "Alumnus of all units, beloved resident, devoted friend and heir to all its (Sewanee's) history."

Dr. Elliott was the son of the Rt. Rev. R. W. B. Elliott, his mother having been Caroline Elliott of Savannah, and the grandson of the Rt. Rev. Stephen Elliott, first Episcopal Bishop of Georgia, a founder and third chancellor of the University of the South, and presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the Confederacy. Stephen Elliott Puckette, professor at Sewanee, who has visited relatives in South Carolina, is a cousin.

Dr. Elliott entered Sewanee Military Academy in 1883 and was graduated from the College with AB. and M. A. degrees the same year and won many honors and several honorary degres.

When Dr. Elliott returned to Sewanee to live in 1940 he restored the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Steven Elliott, and of his aunt, Sarah Barnwell Elliott.

Relatives of Dr. Henry Woodward, the pioneer, though none of his name survives, are Barnwells and Elliotts and their kin, and fairly numerous through South Carolina.
