AMOS EARL "SMOKEY" ROARK
VEGA – Amos Earl "Smokey" Roark, 90, died Wednesday, January 24, 1996.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27, at the First Baptist Church in Vega, with the Rev. James Peach of the church and the Rev. Robert Lindley of Vega United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega by Bell Avenue Chapel of Schooler-Gordon – Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.
Mr. Roark was born in Franklin, Ky., and lived most of his life in Vega. He graduated from Vega High School and attended the University of Texas, where he was a walk-on football player. He married Alberteen Milburn in 1925 at Amarillo.
He owned and operated Roark and Sons Lumber and Hardware, and Mormon Range Minerals. He was also a farmer and stockman. He was an agent for International Harvester and worked 40 years as an agent for Mobil Oil Co.
Mr. Roark had been president of the Federal Land Bank and the Vega School Board. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Vega Kiwanis Club, Khiva Temple and the Masonic Lodge, where he was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.
He was preceded in death by a son, Horace Milburn "Bud" Roark in 1986.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Marvin Lee Roark of Friona; two daughters, Earleen Krahn of Atoka, Okla., and Joyce Barnard of Colleyville; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.
