James was born to William and Mary Matthews Buchan, both of Aberdeen, Scotland.

He was raised in Los Angeles at 25 17 South Marvin Ave. Much later he would buy his own home at 2524 South Marvin Ave.

James held a degree as an mechanical engineer and his early employment was superintendent of construction projects.

James served in WWI.

He married at age 32 yrs, Edna Effen Green, ae 18 yrs. She was the daughter of William and Ellen Wilson Green, of Springfield, Missouri. This was a first marriage for both parties and was held on November 24, 1926 in Santa Ana, California. The couple had one son, James Allen Buchan born on Nov. 3, 1929 in Santa Monica, CA. The marriage ended in divorce.

James died on August 5, 1963 in Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, LA.

For the past 35 years he was a Division Superintendent for the LA Transits, City Trans.

Cause of death was cerebral thrombosis which he suffered with for 34 days and cerebral artiosclerosis.
