The son of William David & Elizabeth (McNeely) Sellers, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. By 1865, he stood 5' 8" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Harrisburg March 9, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 14 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. A, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Anna Mary Taylor July 22, 1873, in Dauphin County and fathered Ada (b. 06/11/74 - married George Hess), Howard (b. @1876), Olive (b. @1878), Mary E. (b. 08/??/79), Ruth S. (b. 04/21/82 - married a Diffenderfer), Mable Ibach (b. 05/24/84 - married Wilmer Clyde Faust), and Helen Margaret (b. 05/21/90 - married William Leslie Nikirk). He retired from a career as a locomotive engineer and died at his daughter Ruth's home in Enola, Cumberland County.

The birth year on his tombstone is incorrect.
1. His death certificate lists July 22, 1844, and an age at death of 85-6-24
2. His stated age at enlistment agrees with the death certificate birth date
3. While the 1850 census claims he was born ca. 1840, all other censuses in which he appears list either 1844 or 1845
4. All his obituaries in Harrisburg newspapers list eighty-five as his age at death
