Married Nancy Billings Oct.17,1850 Ash,Brunswick,North Carolina.
Daughter of Richard Billings and Mary Moxley.
There were 11 children born to this marriage.

Enlisting June 28,1861 at Fox Creek in 51st Va.Inf. Regiment, transfered in early 1862 in 30th Sharp Schooters Battalion and was promoted to full drummer by late 1862. Discharged May 11,1864 serving a total of 3 years and 10 month with his brother Silas Ward also a sharp shooter and full drummer in the 51st and 30th. Silas was captured as a prisoner of war and released June 21,1865. He served a total of 5 years.

He lived on the family farm after the war with his family,his father Zachariah Ward Sr and his brother Silas. The farm was owned originaly by his mother Tabitha Hash's great grandfather John Hash, that was purchased in 1818 by his father Zachariah Sr. Zachariah Jr,a carpenter helped to remodel the family home from a single floor to a two story. Zachariah Ward Sr died in 1878 and the family farm was left to his brother Silas Ward. Upset maybe, Zachariah Jr moved his family to Tazewell Co.,Va. by 1880. There he lived for almost 50 years until his death at almost 94 years old of heat stroke in Aug.28,1926,living with his grandson Chapman Spotts Chambers on the family farm. They say he would walked a mile to church every Sunday. He never returned to Grayson Co.
Chapman provided the information on his death record. The Lairds cemetery provided on his death record is not listed. This graveyard has been mentioned several times in newspaper articles to be next to Lairds Chapel that was near by that could be the place of burial. Several family members listed there burial was in Buchanan Co. and were living in Jewel Ridge, Tazewell Co..The cemetery must be close between the two county lines. There were several mistakes recorded and corrected and the funeral home records were lost in a fire.
