Born April 6, 1923, in Rowlesburg, W.Va., he was a son of the late John A. and Etta D. DeWitt Ashenfelter. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles Ashenfelter; and two sisters, Helen Ralston and Grace Ashenfelter.
He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Rowlesburg High School. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the 728th Railroad Battalion. He was a railroad locomotive engineer for the B&O and CSX railroads with 42 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty J. Coen Ashenfelter; two sons, David Ashenfelter, Reedsville, W.Va., and Jeffrey Ashenfelter, Thomasville, N.C.; two daughters, Chrystal Dean, Rowlesburg, and Robin Drummond, Gore, W.Va.; one brother, James H. Ashenfelter, Morgantown, W.Va.; one sister, Mary Jo Chambers, Ravenswood, W.Va.; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private family funeral service was held, with the Rev. Orville Davis officiating.
Interment was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Lantz Ridge.
