Uncle Simon was a 4th Corporal in Company B, the 34th Regiment of NC Troops, known as the "Sandy Run Yellow Jackets".

Information from "North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865, A Roster", Compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, and published in 1983. Note that the information indicates Uncle Simon was born in Cleveland County, however Cleveland was not formed until 1841 when it was carved from parts of Rutherford and Lincoln Counties. Therefore he was actually born in Rutherford County, NC.

"Born in Cleveland County where he resided a farmer prior to enlisting in Rutherford County at age 29 on September 2, 1861. Mustered in as a Corporal. Wounded in the left leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Left leg amputated. Reported absent wounded through October, 1864."

Family lore tells us he was wounded at Frazier's Farm, Virginia, however this information is backed up by the notation on the muster rolls.

He enrolled for active service on September 2, 1861 at Philadelphia Church, Rutherford County, NC by Capt. Edwards and after an Oath of Allegiance to the State of North Carolina, was mustered into service on October 25, 1861, by Asst Adj Genl Jno C. Winder for a period of one year.

He appears consistently on the muster rolls receiving his pay until reported "Absent wounded since May, 2, 1863". As the muster rolls continued every two months throughout the next year Simon was listed as absent wounded and/or sick since May 2, 1863. These muster rolls indicate "Wounded at Fraziers Farm, leg amputated".

He appears on the Register of General Hospital No. 21, Richmond, Virginia as being admitted on June 5, 1863 and was transferred to Chimborazo on July 13, 1863.

The Register at Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, in Richmond, Virginia, states he was admitted July 13, 1863 for "amputation of left leg above knee joint". He was furloughed on July 28, 1863 for 60 days.
