John was the youngest child and only son of the six known children of Peter BARGER and Anna WEES/WEISS/WYSSE. John's parents were Swiss immigrants arriving in the U.S. on 10 May 1852 on the ship Hungarian. The ship passenger list shows "Peter BERGER" and "Anna WYSSE", but does not provide their marital status. He was 41 and she was 27.

By 1860, Peter and Anna had married and settled in the Wells County, Indiana area. Their six known children were: Cecelia, ca. 1853; Elizabeth, ca. 1855; Rosena, b. ca. 1858; Mary, b. ca. 1860; Anna, b. ca. 1862; and lastly John, born in April 1865, seven months after his father Peter died in October 1864.

John married Mary Chrisman on September 21, 1894, in Adams County, Indiana (Adams County, Indiana marriage book G, page 14).

It appears that John Barger only married once and he was widowed with a three year old son (John) in 1900.

The warranty deed shows burial in "Lot 44, Block D"

John was enumerated in the following U.S. Census records:
1870 and 1880 Wells County, Indiana, Harrison twp., 1900 Census in Kosciusko County, Indiana – Harrison twp., 1910 and 1920 U.S. Census in Allen County, Indiana in Cedar Creek twp.
