Richard Whitehead Gayle was born in 1801, Sumter District, South Carolina, a member of a prominent Alabama family. His first cousin, John Gayle was the sixth governor of Alabama. Richard was the son of John Gayle, Jr. and Nancy Whitehead of Virginia and South Carolina, who moved about 1811 settling in Monroe County, Alabama. Richard was the grandson of John and Marie Billups Gayle of Virginia. He was married first in 1823 in Dallas County, Alabama to Martha Clark who was born in Georgia in 1803. By this marriage he had at least the following children: Benjamin Billups; Susan Amaranth; Matthew W.; Huesties Jackson; Elizabeth S.; Mary Ann; Merril D.; all born in Alabama and John R. born 1844; Filler G. born 1848 and Elbert H. born 1852, all born in Texas.
Richard married the second time in Houston County, Texas. After 1850 but prior to 1853, he moved his family to Houston County, Texas. On August 10, 1854 he bought land from G. W. Southwick, in the James Neville League, southwest of where Lovelady is now located. There he made his home and lived until his death in 1866. He lived on a creek that took his name and has ever since been known as "Gayle Creek".
