She was the daughter of Richard Whitehead Gayle (1801-1855) and Martha Clark (1803-?). Mary Ann came to Texas with her family sometime around 1846. After her death, oral history has that her husband, Calvert Gallitin (Cal) Wooten, was courting another young woman. He was killed shortly after this when someone rode by his home, and shot thru the door and killed him.
We see from the Census that Mr & Mrs Wooten were quite well off, due to having $10,870 property value along with owning 13 slaves.
