We find Mary Ann Wooten 20 years old on the 1860 Houston County Census, Beat #4, living with her husband. She tells the census taker she was born in Alabama. She was the daughter of Richard Whitehead Gayle (1801-1855) and Martha Clark (1803-?). Mary Ann came to Texas with her family sometime around 1846. After her death, oral history has that her husband, Calvert Gallitin (Cal) Wooten, was courting another young woman. He was killed shortly after this when someone rode by his home, and shot thru the door and killed him.

We see from the Census that Mr & Mrs Wooten were quite well off, due to having $10,870 property value along with owning 13 slaves.

Mary Ann was the sister of Benjamin Billups; Susan Amaranth; Matthew W.; Huesties Jackson; Elizabeth S.; Merril D.; all born in Alabama and John R. born 1844; Filler G. born 1848 and Elbert H. born 1852, all born in Texas.
