Sleeps As Home is Leveled (Newspaper article from 1935) -

Fraxville, Lunenburg County, Aug. 12 – Tragedy stalked this village this morning when Judson Legge, 80- year-old farmer and highly respected resident of the community lost his life in a fire that leveled a dwelling and for a short time threatened to do still further damage. Discharge of a cartridge; which is believed to have exploded when the fire reached it, awakened the victim's son, Norman and probably saved him from the same fate.

COULD NOT RETURN
Mr. Legge and his son were asleep in separate bedrooms in the upstairs flat of the little frame home. Awakened by the cartridge explosion at 3 o'clock, Norman made his way with difficulty to the open. Valiantly he endeavored to reach his father. Once outside he was unable to again get into the building, the flames making all efforts at rescue impossible. While the cause of the blaze was not definitely established the theory was advanced that the victim may have laid his pipe on the mantle and matches close by became ignited. The cartridge which the son heard exploding also was on the mantle.

IS ACCIDENTAL
At the inquest this morning the jury found the tragedy was accident and no blame was attached to anyone. Origin of the fire was not determined officially. The jury: Lawson Turner; Edward Corbin; Edgar Hiltz; E.J. Keddy, foreman: William Turner; Grant Turner; George Turner; James Faulkner; Rufus Hiltz; Freeman Hiltz; Bern Hiltz; Roderick Hiltz. The victim of the tragedy is survived by two brothers, James Legge 90 of Middleboro, Mass.; Jeremiah Legge of Lake Ramsay; one sister, Mrs. Anna Keddy 70, residing in Nova Scotia; three sons, Newton, St. Stephen, NS; Norman at home; Edgar, Dalhousie; Three daughters, Mrs. Luke (Esther) Hiltz, Aylesford, Mrs. Edward (Edna) Corbin, Fraxville; Mrs. Rufus (Emily) Hiltz. The funeral is to take place Wednesday at two o'clock. A grandchild, Mrs. John Roast, had intended moving into the house today.
