Maria Simona Cordera was the 2nd of 15 children born to Juan de Jesus Cordero and Maria Antonia Valenzuela. Born on 18 February 1825 near Santa Barbara Presidio, she was baptized there on 21 February 1825 with her padrinos being Rafael Valdes y Maria Rafaela Pico. [BP 00683 ECPP]

In Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Santa Barbara, on 27 September 1842 Simona married Juan de la Cruz Ruiz. She was 17 and he was the 20 year old son of Jose Antonio Nicolas Ruiz and Maria Antonia de la Encarnacion Pico.

Their first child was born one year later, followed quickly by eight more children. Three of their four sons lived to adulthood and all five of their daughters lived to adulthood.

When Simona died on 11 November 1855 she left her husband with eight small children, the two youngest being just one and two years old. As was the custom, Simona's husband married five months later to have someone taking care of his children.
