Juan de Jesús Antonio Cordero y Valenzuela was born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, where he was baptized at the Presidio Chapel June 5, 1831 (BP Baptism 00913). He was the son of Juan de Jesús Cordero y Pinto (1800-1876) and María Antonia Valenzuela y Fernández (1806-1885). He became a citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. Juan married María Guadalupe Ayala y Valenzuela (1831-1911) at Mission Santa Bárbara September 27, 1852. Juan enlisted as a private at Santa Bárbara July 25, 1864, and was mustered into Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, alongside his brother, José de Jesús. Private Cordero was posted at Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, from September 1865 until January 1866. He returned to California with his company and was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco April 2, 1866. Juan returned to Santa Bárbara, where he filed for a Civil War veteran's pension May 19, 1891, and received application No. 1,023,783 and certificate No. 742,793. After his death, María Guadalupe filed for a widow's pension June 19, 1909, and received application No. 922,234 and certificate No. 686,498.
