Glenn S. Bachtell, 80, of Eckstine Court, Smithsburg, Md., peacefully passed away Saturday Sept. 24, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md.

Born May 23, 1931, in Edgemont, Md., he was the son of the late Samuel A. and Irene (Schildt) Bachtell.

He was a graduate of Smithsburg High School, class of 1949.

He was a veteran and commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of captain.

He graduated from Hagerstown Community College in 1951, University of Maryland in 1953 and George Washington University in 1973, receiving his MBA degree.

He retired in 1985 as a partner of Main LaFrentz and Co. CPAs, which became Main Hurdman, and was owner of Blue Ridge Fasteners Inc.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Smithsburg, serving as past council president and treasurer; former member of Fountain Head Country Club, serving as past president, vice president and treasurer, and served as a member of the board of governors; and served on various boards of community organizations and local charities.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joann L. (Snowberger) Bachtell, whom he married July 28, 1951; daughter, Debra Persons and husband, Lewis, of Smithsburg; son, Donovan Bachtell and wife, Laura, of Southern Pines, N.C.; sisters, Delores J. Bumbaugh of Rouzerville, Pa., and Doris J. Stevens of Smithsburg; grandchildren, Elaine Persons of Smithsburg, Bruce Persons of Birmingham, Ala., Erika Goldstein of Cary, N.C., and Michael J. Weiss of Hagerstown; and great-grandchildren, Alex Goldstein and Ethan Goldstein.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edgar and Reba Snowberger.

Services will be Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg, with Pastor Virgil Cain officiating. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
