Kathryn Schommer Dies in Omaha at 86

Mrs. Kathryn Schommer, 86, died Friday noon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Norbert T. Nelson, 4419 North Twenty-first street. She had been ill four years.

Survivors include five sons, John, Spencer, Neb.; Joseph and William, Chadron, Neb.; Bernard, Geneva, Neb.; and Anthony, Lawrence, Neb.; five daughters, Mrs. Mary Katheiser and Mrs Anna Pendergast, Geneva; Mrs. Margaret Harkes, Chadron, and Mrs. Angela Eichler and Mrs. Nelson of Omaha. Services will be at Turkey Creek, Neb., Monday, 10 a.m. with Father Uhlenberg officiating. Rosary tonight at 8 p.m. at the John A. Gentleman chapel, 8 p.m. Sunday at the Nelson home here.

Pioneer Passes Away

Kathryn (Buettner) Schommer, passed away at Omaha, Neb., Friday, April 10, 1942, at the age of 86 years, 2 months and 8 days. Mrs. Schommer resided in Fillmore county the largest part of her life. She had made her home the last four years with her daughter, Mrs. Norbert T. Nelson, at Omaha.

Kathryn Buettner was born at Lake Church, Wis., February 2, 1856. She was united in marriage to John Bernard Schommer at Holy Cross, Wis., May 1, 1877. To this union were born thirteen children, three of whom died in infancy. Ten are living, five girls and five boys. They are John of Spencer, Neb., Joseph and William and Margaret Harkes of Chadron, Bernard, Mary Katheiser and Anna Pendergast of Geneva, Rose Nelson and Angela Eichler of Omaha and Anthony of Lawrence. There are thirty-six grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. John B. Schommer came to Fillmore county to homestead in February, 1878. They endured many hardships through drought, grasshoppers and depression of the nineties. Mrs. Schommer still owned the homestead where she came as a bride.

The funeral service was held at St. Mary's church, Turkey Creek, at 10 o'clock Monday, April 13, with Father Ulenberg officiating. She was laid to rest in the Turkey Creek cemetery beside her husband, who passed away April 8, 1922. All of the ten children were in attendance at her funeral.Katherine was born in 1881 or 1882 and died shortly after her birth. She was buried west of where her parents stone is set.
