Ellis was the son of John Cannon Sr. and Sarah Hammett Broderick, daughter of William Hammett and Margaret Underwood. "Ellis Cannon and the Reverend Charles Smith migrated from Virginia about l77O and settled on land extending from the present site of Cowpens to the Pacolet Biver." From the book "The Old Iron District", by Bobby Gilmer Moss. John married: BRODERICK, Sarah and John CANNON, Jul 8, 1745, from the Register of Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co, VA. Sarah Hammitt, as a young girl, had married Christopher Broderick. They had one daughter, Mary Broderick. Christopher Broderick died within the first year of their marriage. Ellis was the preacher at Cannon's Campground United Methodist Church in Cowpens, SC during the 1770's. Ellis married Elizabeth Coleman b 1750 m ca 1767 Culpepper Co. Va. On the 1790 Spartanburg Co SC census there were four Cannons listed: Ellis, Henry, Jesse, and John. John must have been either his son, born 1769, or brother, because according to sources, John the father died in 1788. They were most likely all related. His son Elijah donated the property that the cemetery sits on to build the church. Most of the family is buried there. The following is a list of children that may or may not be accurate. The data was gotten from on line sources, and needs to be proven:

1. John Cannon 20 Oct 1769-May 1850
2. Elizabeth Cannon 1770-1770
3. Jesse Cannon 1770-1770
3. Phoebe Cannon 1772-1772
4. Henry Cannon 11 Aug 1773-12 Oct 1864
5. Lewis C. Cannon 6 Mar 1775-Dec 1852
6. Female Unknown 1776/7
7. William Wilson Cannon 1778-4 Apr 1846

9. James George Cannon b 1786
10. Winnifred Cannon Vandiver b 1788
11. Susannah Cannon Ward b 1789
12. Unknown Cannon b 1790

Ellis served 18 months in the Revolutionary War under Capt. Scott in the 3rd Regiment of the Continental Line. Ellis was a "taster of foods" for General George Washington. He received a military pension in 1830 in Spartanburg, S. C.

I am descended from Ellis' daughter, Susannah, who married Samuel Ward. They migrated west to Alabama.

According to Harry Cannon William Wilson Cannon married Lucy Ward, sister of Samuel Ward. I don't know where they are buried. Lewis C. Cannon married Elizabeth Templeman. James G. Cannon married Rebecca Elizabeth Weaver, she is buried in Mount Carmel. Winifred Cannon married john Vandiver. John Cannon married Martha Moore, and Jesse Cannon married Martha Bryant.

Thanks to my sister, Kim, for her additions to this bio.
