On Nov. 11, 1862, Charles was promoted to Corporal. On Feb. 24, 1864, to date from Feb. 14, 1864, he was discharged at Banancas, Florida, in order to re-enlist as a Veteran Volunteer, thereby qualifying for the $400.00 re-enlistment bounty. On April 9, 1877, it was noted by the War Department, A.G.O., that Charles's Muster out date was March 14, 1866, the same as the rest of Company I.

After his discharge, Charles moved to New York state, where he lived in Albany for a time, later moving to Madison Co. In 1876, he moved to Chippewa Co., Wis., where he remained until moving to Barron, Wis., in 1882, and Rusk Co. Wis., in 1900.
