He died Sep. 22, 1913, in Rusk Twp., Rusk Co., Wis., and was buried in the nearby Twin Lakes Cemetery, Chippewa Co., Wis. His military style gravestone is inscribed Sergt. Chas. H. Bowers Co. I. 7 Vt. Inf."
On Sep. 5, 1867, Charles was united in marriage to Josephine Anna Remes, at Albany, New York. She died Sep. 22, 1868, place of death and burial unknown. No known children.

On Nov. 11, 1862, Charles was promoted to Corporal. In Sep. 1863, he lost the middle finger of his right hand, near the second joint, due to the premature discharge of a cannon during target practice. On Feb. 24, 1864, to date from Feb. 14, 1864, he was discharged at Banancas, Florida, in order to re-enlist as a Veteran Volunteer, thereby qualifying for the $400.00 re-enlistment bounty. His re-enlistment date was recorded as Feb. 15, 1864, and his muster in date Feb. 25, 1864. At that time he was listed as a 19 years and 2 months old, 5'3" tall soldier, with light hair, blue eyes and a light complexion, born in Pittsford, Vermont.
On the muster rolls from May to July, 1864, he was noted to be on daily duty as Post Adjutant Clerk. In August 1864, he was noted to be absent on furlough since Aug. 26, 1864. On March 1, 1865, he was promoted to 4th Sergeant. On the muster roll of Nov/Dec, 1865, it was noted that he was detailed as clerk in office of the Chief Medical Officer, Western District of Texas at Brownsville, Texas. On the Co. I Muster Out Roll of March 14, 1866, at Brownsville, Texas, it was noted that he owed the U.S. $25.66 for transportation, while absent on furlough for 60 days in Vermont; owed the Sutler $10.00; was due $140.00 of his re-enlistment bounty; and no discharge was given. On April 9, 1877, it was noted by the War Department, A.G.O., that Charles's Muster out date was March 14, 1866, the same as the rest of Company I.
