US Congressman. He was a farmer in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and served as Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1820 to 1822. He was elected to the United States Congress from Pennsylvania, serving from 1825 to 1829, and again, from 1841 until his death in 1842. He was the father of United States Representative George Van Eman Lawrence.
