The son of Joseph B. & Maria Magdalena (Bucher) Lawrence, he married Anna Elizabeth Watson May 16, 1854, and fathered Ellen (b. 04/23/55, d. 01/04/59), Joseph (b. 02/01/57, d. 12/30/58), William Watson (b. 04/22/59), Maria Theresa (b. 03/31/61- married William Robert Turner), Anna Margaret (b. 01/01/64), John Jacob (b. 10/05/65), and Susan Mary (b. 01/17/68). In 1860, he was a railroad superintendent living with his family in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, August 9, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as captain of Co. F, 125th Pennsylvania Infantry, but promoted to major to date August 15, 1862. He honorably discharged with the regiment May 18, 1863.
2. Enlisted during the Gettysburg crisis and mustered into state service at Huntingdon July 8, 1863, as colonel of the 46th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with the regiment August 19, 1863.

His obituary in the Pittsburgh Daily Post erroneously claims he served with the 125th Pennsylvania Infantry at the rank of lieutenant colonel. The same obituary asserts that he was wounded at the battle of Bull Run (not specifying which), which is impossible because the 125th Pennsylvania was not at the second battle of Bull Run and Lawrence was not in the army at the time of the first battle of Bull Run. His second term of service has also been erroneously identified as being with the 46th Pennsylvania Infantry, a completely different regiment.
