John D. Mathis, age 82, of Demotte, IN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at St. Anthony Hospice in Crown Point, IN.
John was born on July 26, 1928 in Akron, OH and raised in Harriman TN, the youngest son of late John and Jesse Mathis.
John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Ina (nee Pennington) Mathis; daughters: Linda (James) Neal, Janice (Jon) Huffmaster, Debra (Mike) Runyan, Johann (J.D.) Powell, Gina Caldwell-Kaiser, Terri (Greg) Green; sons: Bill Caldwell and John (Kelli) Mathis II; sister, Lola Farr; and brother, Clayton Mathis. He also is survived by many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Brett Caldwell. After moving to Indiana, John worked for Charles Gluth & Sons Roofing, Inc. of Hammond, Indiana for over 50 years. He was known for his craftsmanship and hard work.
John loved his wife and children and was proud of all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Graceland Cemetery, 1505 E. Morthland Dr., Valparaiso, IN.
