Mark Self was born in Wiltshire, England, May 9, 1832, and is a son of Isaac and Christine Taylor Self, both natives of Wiltshire, where they died, the former at the age of 76 years and the latter when 67 years old. They were the parents of nine children: Rebecca, Liva, Lott, Jane, Ann, Mark, Abel (now living in Huron County, Ohio), Amanda and Sarah.

Mark, who was a laborer in England, came to America in 1870. He first located in Huron County, Ohio, removing in 1880 to Wood County, where he purchased his present farm at $50 per acre. He now owns 130 acres of well improved and valuable land. During the few years he has been Wood County, he has made an independent fortune, all the result of untiring industry and excellent management. He has been twice married, his first wife dying in England before his emigration to this country. By this union he had three children: Arthur, was married and has one child (he resides in Bowling Green); Frank, unmarried, and living with his father; William, living in Toledo, Ohio. Mr. Self's second marriage occurred in this country.

Mark was christened 2 June 1833 in Melksham, Wiltshire, England and married 22 July 1860 in St. James, Bath, Somerset, England to Mary Deverell. They had Ellen Matilda, Arthur Robert, Frank, and William J. Mary died in the first quarter of 1864. In the first quarter of 1871, Ellen Matilda(1861-1871) died at the age of nine in Melksham, England. Mark then immigrated with his three sons. Upon arriving in this country, Mark married Anna Radiff on 13 October 1877 in Erie County.
