Harold was born in Ravenna, Ohio and served in the Army during World War II (Italy, Rome, Salerno, France and Africa). He was discharged in 1945. Harold worked as a gardener, brick maker, share farmer, crane operator and farmer.

Harold married Viola Mary Samide on June 30, 1945. Harold and Viola had three children (James, Michael and Susan).

From 1956-1965, Harold and Viola lived on a farm in Burton, Ohio (Jug Road) where they produced maple syrup and grew potatoes, tomatoes, sweet corn and cucumbers. In 1966, they bought additional/adjoining acreage and developed a lake/campground known as Ledge Lake.

Harold had a stroke in the summer of 1967 and was disabled from then until his death on February 7, 1983.
