Born on December 18, 1916 in Rock, Kansas, she was the daughter of Dewitt Vaughn and Cora Alice (Rosebery) Aldrich. She was raised and received her education near Deer Creek, Oklahoma and graduated from Deer Creek High School in 1934. She later attended Tonkawa Junior College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma for 2 years. During that time she also attained a cosmetology license.
She was united in marriage on August 17, 1941 to Orval P. Goertz at the Methodist Church in Deer Creek, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in Greensburg, Kansas. They later moved to Medford, Oklahoma where they owned and operated an ice locker and packing plant. Sarah operated a beauty shop out of the home. In 1959, the couple moved to Winfield. Sarah worked at BIC loans and later McGee & Lewis as an accountant. She was later employed at Industrial Supply as a secretary. After retiring she went back to work part time at Loving Care Nursing Home. Mr. Goertz preceded her in death on February 10, 2004.
Sarah was an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Winfield as well as the Esther Fellowship Circle. She helped with many of the activities at the church including the Food Pantry. Sarah also belonged to the United Methodist Women and had served as treasurer of the district and was a member of the Church Women United. She had served as a past matron in the Order of the Eastern Star in Medford, Oklahoma where she was a member for over 50 years as well as a Mother Advisor for the Rainbow Girl Association. Sarah loved to knit, crochet, do beadwork and was a wonderful seamstress. She will be remembered for all the pies, cookies and angel food cakes she made for church and family.
Her family includes: Her son: Vernon Goertz and wife Cindy of Winfield, KS; Her daughter: Cora Frazee and husband Ted of Wichita, KS; Her brothers: Raymond Aldrich of Winfield, KS; and Harold Aldrich and wife Bernita of Blackwell, OK; Her sisters: Colene Elizabeth Mercer of Blackwell, OK; and Marva Alice Brittle and husband Elson of Tuscon, AZ; Her grandchildren: Chad Smalley and wife Marilee, Lori Goertz-Hubert and husband Mike, Marsha Smalley-Stout and husband John, and Kelle Goertz-Thompson and husband Craig; Her great-grandchildren: Jeremy, Derek and Noah Stout, Jacob and Caleb Hubert, Hunter and Mark Thompson, John Ed and Wendy Jo Cook; and Her great-great-grandchildren: Brylee Jade and Emarie Elizabeth Stout. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon D. Aldrich.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 5, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Friday, June 24, 2011. The family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., that evening.
A memorial has been established in Sarah's name for Grace United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
